Date:

Cairo, 14 July 2021- UN Women Egypt commends the approval of the Egyptian parliament in advancing more legal rights for Egyptian women through the amendment to the Penal Code which make sexual harassment now a felony. The new amendment to the Penal Code increases the penalty for sexual harassment to a minimum of two years imprisonment instead of six months, alongside a fine that ranges between 100,000 to 200,000 EGP, compared to a previous fine of 3,000 to 5,000 EGP.

“The newly approved amendment gives greater force to the country’s constitutional commitments to protect women from all forms of violence and gives greater opportunity for women’s leadership, voice, and participation.” said Christine Arab, UN Women Egypt Representative.

In support of the implementation of the amendments, UN Women Egypt looks forward to working with national partners, including the National Council for Women and its Women’s Complaints Office in the critical role they play in this regard.
