“Between Two Seas” Film in Alexandria University

Cairo, 25 March 2021- Within the framework of cooperation between the National Council for Women and UN Women, and with the participation of H.E. Ambassador Noke Masaki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, “Between Two Seas” film was screened at the Teaching Staff Club of Alexandria University under the auspices of Professor Abdel Aziz Qonsowa, the President of Alexandria University.

In her speech during the event, Dr. Rania Yehia; Member of the National Council for Women, reflected on the National Council for Women’ efforts in ending all forms of violence against women and urged the students to report cases of violence.

In his remarks, Professor Hisham Gaber, Vice President for Student Affairs, emphasized on the importance of empowering women and girls while reaffirming that addressing women’s issues is a priority for Alexandria University. He expressed his pleasure with the screening of the film today and mentioned Alexandria University’s willingness to organize another screening for the film in the future given its importance as it addresses women’s issues, supports women and raises the awareness of students. Dr. Gaber thanked the National Council for Women, UN Women and the Embassy of Japan for screening the film in Alexandria University. 

In his speech, H.E Ambassador Noke Masaki affirmed the Government of Japan’s global and national commitment to support women’s issues while highlighting the partnership with the National Council for Women and UN Women Egypt to advance women’s empowerment.

In her speech Ms. Christine Arab, UN Women Egypt Country Representative, indicated that UN Women Egypt considers “Between Two Seas” as one of the proudest achievements of the partnership with the National Council for Women because of the important role that cinema plays in national dialogue on gender equality.

At the conclusion of the event, Dr. Rania Yehia, Member of the National Council for Women, presented the Shield of Honor of the National Council for Women to H.E. Ambassador Noke Masaki on behalf of H.E. Dr. Maya Morsy, President of the National Council for Women, in an expression of the National Council for Women’ appreciation to the Government of Japan for its support for women's issues.

The event was attended by Dr. Bahia Shaheen, Executive Director of the Anti-Harassment Unit at the University, who contributed to today’s event and briefed the distinguished attendees on the activities of the unit since its establishment in 2017. The event was attended by students and faculty of Alexandria University and was organized by the National Council for Women’s branch in Alexandria.

It is worth mentioning that “Between Two Seas” has won 21 awards so far during its tour in national and international festivals. "Between Two Seas" is the first feature film produced through cooperation between the National Council for Women and UN Women as part of their belief in the important role that cinema plays in changing negative perceptions towards women in different societies, and it was made possible through the generous support of the Government of Japan and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The film is written by Mariam Naoum (Sard), directed by Anas Tolba and produced by Axeer.
