Elminating female genital mutilation (FGM) programme

ABANDONMENT OF FGM AND EMPOWERMENT OF FAMILIES JOINT PROGRAM

The Abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the Empowerment of Families is a UN Joint Programme supported by UN Women together with UNDP, UNICEF and UNFPA, and implemented in partnership with national and civil society organizations. The aim of the joint programme is to create and sustain a political, legal and social environment able to empower families and communities to abandon FGM and other forms of violence against children, especially the girl child. It consists of four pillars: institutionalization of the fight of FGM, up-scaling, enhancing partnerships and coordination and strengthening monitoring and evaluation. The joint programme builds on the achievements spearheaded by the National Population Council (NPC), resulted in the approval of legislation criminalizing the act of FGM, and the increase in the number of people reporting FGM incidents via the child helpline.
